Franklin Olds, who died at his home in Mountaindale, Tuesday morning, Feb. 27, was a graduate of Union College. After leaving college he studied law and located in Newark, N.J., where he soon gained a high reputation as a criminal lawyer.

At one time he was considered wealthy, and his real estate in and about Newark was extensive, owning at one time forty houses. About fifteen years ago he gave up his law practice in Newark and invested largely in real estate at Mountaindale, where he mapped out a large tract of land in village lots and put in a regular sewerage system, spending thousands of dollars. His dream of developing Mountaindale into a large town has not been realized, as he restricted all prospective builders to such an extent that they refused to invest there, and as a result he gradually began to lose money, and at the time of his death it is generally conceded that most of his wealth in business at Mountaindale is gone and that his executors will not realize sufficient from his estate to satisfy his creditors. He had his faults, we all have, but there was much in the man to admire in him. While every investment seemed to turn to money in the State of New Jersey for Mr. Olds, his operations in New York were stamped with failure, and in no way could the tide be changed.
