James Hereford I, born in England in 1630, came to the colonies in 1653 described as a "Cavalier of England" and his son James II, a carpenter, was born in 1668 in Fairfax County, Virginia. The oldest son of James II, and his heir, was John Hereford I, born in January, 1698.
In 1740, Henry Herriford Sr. was born to John Hereford I and Jane Barnes in Fairfax County, Virginia, and his wife Frances Ann (Nancy) Minitree was born the same year in Charles County, Maryland. They were married about 1760 in Virginia, and three of their children were born in Virginia; the others were born in North Carolina. At this time, variations in the spelling of the family name were occurring. Their eleven children were Sarah Heryford born in 1762, Ann Heryford born in 1764, Jane Heryford born in 1766, Rosamond Heryford born in 1768, Frances Herreford born in 1770, James Heryford (Sr.) born in 1772, Andrew Heryford born about 1777, Henry Herreford II born about 1779, George Herreford born about 1782, William Herreford born about 1786, and Paul Heryford born 1790. Henry Herriford died July 7, 1814, and Frances Ann (Nancy) died in July, 1833. Both were buried in Winchester, Franklin County, Tennessee.
Their youngest son, Paul Heryford married Sarah Rede in Franklin County, Tennessee, August 16, 1810 and they lived in Wayne County, Kentucky on land inherited from Paul's father Henry. When they were living in Kentucky, Paul enlisted and served November 1814 to May 1815 in Captain Barberry Collin's Company of Tennessee militia in the Revolution. The first three children were born in Kentucky: Nancy August 6, 1811, Elizabeth October 29, 1813 (died in 1815) and Jane April 1, 1815. In 1817, Paul and Sarah joined his two brothers James and John Hereford and families in Chariton County, Missouri, and by 1820 they had moved to Callaway County where eight of their children were born. James was born March 8, 1820; Clemons Rede, October 28, 1821; Bennett, April 10, 1825; Martha, February 14, 1827; Sarah "Sallie", September 4, 1849; Melvina, January 17, 1832; Mary Tamas, July 9, 1834 and Thomas, Septermber 18, 1837. After almost forty years in Missouri, in May 1857, their acreage was deeded to son James. Paul and Sarah were on their way to California together with their fifth child, Clemons Rede Heryford and his family, their sixth child Bennett and his family, their ninth child, Melvina, her children, husband Hudson Gentry and his father Wilson Gentry.
October 3, 1857, soon after their arrival, Paul died of what they called a "congestive chill" at Pine Grove in Shasta County, and he was buried in the Beck Cemetery in Millville. Sarah Rede Heryford stayed in the Millville area for about a year, then returned to Missouri to live with their son, James Heryford. She traveled by sailing vessel from San Francisco to Panama, crossed the Isthmus of Panama on a mule, took a vessel to New Orleans and a river boat on the Mississippi to have her son James meet her in Quincy, Illinois and take her on a wagon to the home in Missouri. She died in Knox County, Missouri, December 15, 1879, and was buried at the Christian Church Cemetery in Greensburg, Missouri.
