Native of Butler Co., AL. Lived 46 years in Mobile (since 1940). Husband of Ruth Devern Gates Rhodes. Two daughters-- Sharron and Stephanie. He passed away at age 65.

MILITARY BIOGRAPHY:

'Steve' D. Rhodes enlisted on Sept. 22, 1942 from Mobile, Mobile Co., AL, at Ft. McClellan, AL . His serial number was 34392035. His enlistment papers indicate that he had three years of high school and his pre-War occupation was 'skilled pattern and model maker'. He was married. He joined the 455th AAA Bn., Battery 'A', and became a Sergeant. The unit trained at Camp Stewart and Ft. Benning, Ga., then went overseas to Norfolk, England in Sept. 1943. Steve's Battery 'B' guarded a B-17 airbase at Snetterton Heath, Norfolk, England.

In July 1944, the unit went to France for 'Operation Cobra' as part of Patton's 3rd Army, Walker's XX Corps. They later went into Germany and Austria and returned home in October 1945.

NOTE: On July 24, 1944, the 455th AAA Bn. Journal recorded the following information: "Combat Actions: At 1058, ‘A' Btry. reported that shelling had started at 2410 on July 23rd and ended at 0615 on the 24th (over 6 hours). The area shelled was the ‘A' Battery area. There was no material damage, nor were there casualties. Sgt. (Steve) Rhodes was struck by a piece of falling shrapnel..."

It isn't recorded if Rhodes received a Purple Heart for this.
