MJR US ARMY AIR FORCES - WORLD WAR II
Dwight E. Adams, 92, of Longwood Avenue, Augusta, passed away Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Maine Veterans Home, after many years of failing health. He was born in Bowdoin, June 4, 1917, the son of Edwin and Mabel (Wilson) Adams. Following graduation from high school in 1934, Dwight worked for the town with his father, the road commissioner. In 1941, Dwight was drafted prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor and served as a navigator on a B-17, in the 8th Army Air Corps, in England, from 1941 to 1945. He participated in campaigns in the Rhineland, Northern France, and the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and the European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Medal with three bronze service stars.
Dwight was employed for 30 years as a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and received the Letter Carrier of the Year Award, at the state convention, in the 1970s. He also served in the Air Force Reserve for many years, retiring as a major.
Mr. Adams was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Bailey; two brothers Laurence and Gerald Adams; and his niece Cheryl Adams.
He is survived by his devoted, loving wife of 48 years, Joanne; his daughter, Marlene Ackley and her husband, John, of Bowdoinham; two stepsons, Stephen Hatch and his wife, Barbara, of Clinton, and M. Daniel Hatch and his wife, Susan, of Marstens Mills, Mass.; his grandchildren, Larry Young, of Bowdoin, Holly Fournier, of Bowdoinham, and Scott Ackley, of Freeport; his great-grandchildren, Jennifer Wienchowski, Michelle Kelleher, Angela Young, Marcie Fournier, Seth Fournier, Joshua Ackley and Mackenzie Ackley; his stepgrandchildren, Jennifer Hatch, of Warwick, R.I., Jocelyn Hatch, of Scarborough, Corey Hatch, of Jackson Hole, Wyo., Lindsey Hughes, of Osterville, Mass., and Teresa Henderson, of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; a very special great-granddaughter, Zoe Grace Hughes; his nieces Peggy Murphy, Karen Mayo and Beverly Koepper; his nephews, Richard Adams, Dana Adams and Wayne Bailey; his great-great-grandchildren, Taylor and Hayden Wienchowski and Sidney and Faryn Kelleher; and his step-great-grandchildren, Jedidiah and Samuel Henderson.
Burial, with military honors, will be at the new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. (Morning sentinel 1/20/2010)
