HENRY WILSON

Henry B. Wilson

Col. Henry Brooks Wilson, born in El Paso, Texas in 1915, died Saturday, January 16, 2010, in Heartland Hospice in Wilmington, Delaware.

Son of Col. Arthur H. Wilson of Springfield, Il., and Helen Brooks of Washington, D.C., Col. Wilson came from a long line of decorated U.S. Army officers, including his paternal grandfather, Bluford Wilson of Springfield, Il., and his great uncle, Gen. James Harrison Wilson, one of Gen. Grant's cavalry generals, and one of the founders of the Wilmington Country Club. He was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1938. Already a fine tennis player, he chose to follow his father and brother, Arthur H. Wilson, as captain of the USMA Polo Team, which had won the intercollegiate polo championship for three consecutive years. During World War II, Col. Wilson joined the Army Air Force, completed pilot training in 1943, and was assigned to the 8th Airforce, 457th Bombardment Group. As a B-17 pilot, he led his group and flew twenty five missions in early 1944 out of Glatton, England over Germany and German occupied countries. Following the end of the war, he continued his service to his country, serving in Tripoli, Libya; and Athens, Greece; where he served as base commander. He was a recipient of Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Croix de Guerre with Palm, American Campaign Medal, and other decorations. Upon retirement from the military, he earned a Masters in Business Administration from George Washington University, and a Masters of Arts degree in Physics from St. Louis University. He settled in Newark, DE, where he pursued a second career teaching physics at Delaware Technical and Community College. He loved tennis and golf, winning a Delaware Senior Tennis championship in 1974.

His son, Miles H. Wilson, preceded him in death. His wife, Marjorie Helen O'Dell Wilson; four of his five children, John Wilson, Robert Wilson, Lee Ann Collins, and Mia Diamond; and six grandchildren survive him.

A full military honors funeral for Col. Wilson will be held in Arlington National Cemetery. A funeral Mass will be held locally at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, Delaware on Friday, January 22, at 11:30 am with visitation at 11 am.
