On January 19, 2010 Lottie Lewis Burris, 87, went to be with her Lord. She was born in Winnabow, N. C. on March 21, 1922 to Elizabeth and Everett Lewis.

She and her family moved to New Hanover County in 1958, later moving to the Ogden community where she lived out her life.

Mrs. Burris was a wonderful and loving wife and mother who always put the needs of her family before her own. Her spirit was gentle, her speech was soft and her heart was compassionate.

Life's simple pleasures made her the happiest. Growing her vegetables, her huge sunflowers, cooking the very best of Southern food, constructing the most impeccable of garments were among many of her accomplishments and talents.

Mrs. Burris began deer hunting with her husband in her mid 70's and killed her first deer at age 75.

At Champion Davis Assisted Living Facility, her home for the last 5 years of her life, Mrs. Burris was a member of the Bell Choir and the Red Hat Society.

She is survived by her three children, son, Jimmy Burris of Porter's Neck, daughter and son in law, Barbara and Steve Everhart of Middle Sound, daughter, Janis Sundquist of Atlanta, Georgia, brothers, Isom Lewis, of Wilmington, N. C., Larry Lewis of The Villages, Florida, sister, Polly Hoots of Marietta, Georgia, four grandchildren, Skip and Merredith Everhart, Nicole Sundquist, and Robert and Preston Burris, two great grand children, Hannah and Emma Everhart.

The family will receive friends at a reception at the Ogden Baptist Church fellowship hall at 12:00 on Friday, January 22, 2010. Services will immediately follow at 1:00 in the sanctuary of the church. Guests will proceed to Greenlawn Memorial Park for final interment.

The family would like to give special thanks to those who greatly aided in giving care and comfort to Mrs. Burris in her final years. Those special thanks go to the staff at Champions, the staff on the 8th floor and the emergency room staff at New Hanover Memorial Hospital . Janis Sundquist and Jimmy Burris would especially like to give a world of thanks to our sister, Barbara, who loved and cared for our mother more than anyone else could possibly have done.

Lottie Rheu Burris, kind, loving, compassionate, energetic, persistent and tenacious will be so greatly missed.
