At the Heartfield Assisted Living. He lived in Poplar Springs and Mount Airy, MD. He was a graduate of Lisbon High School and became a carpenter during the Depression. In 1933 he began a career in farming and continued farming at Hampton Court Farm until 1961, during which time he won some of the first awards for growing 100 bushels of corn per acre. In the 1950s, he received awards for soil conservation and contour farming which also resulted in a free trip to Arizona for a stay at the Goodyear Experimental Farm.
In 1961, he, his cousin George Fleming, and son, Thomas Fleming, built his retirement home in Poplar Springs near the 1752 Church, and the Home in which he was born. The location of his new home was on the site of his great-great-grandfather's house. Ten generations of his ancestors have lived in and around the Poplar Springs area. Other family names included Pickett, Delauter, Bowman, Driver, & Warthen. Until his death, his great-grandmother Warthen was the longest living relative in his family. She died at the age of 92. His mother's father's, & wife's death also occurred in late October, as his did.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Clara Buxton Fleming in October of 1994; his parents, J. Elmer Fleming & Laura Pickett Fleming; son-in-law, John E. Myers; a grandson, J. Edward Myers, and brothers, Charles J. & Raymond E. Fleming.
Survivors include four children, Donald E. Fleming and his wife, Shirley Welsh, Mildred I. Meyers, A. Thomas Fleming, & Janette M. Knill and her husband, Charles Gordon, Jr.; eight grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Interment in the Church graveyard followed funeral services conducted Monday, October 26, 2009.
