Ashton Eugene Applewhite, 75, a life long resident of this county, died in Louse Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk, on Sunday night, November 23, after an illness of several weeks.

The deceased was a son of the late Albert Moore and Mrs. Laura Saunders Applewhite of the county, and was a member of the Courtland Methodist church, in which he served as a steward for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Martha Vann Applewhite; four daughters, Miss Laura Applewhite of Courtland, Mrs. S.M. Edwards of Conway, N.C., Mrs. W.H. Lawson of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Mrs. H.G. Presson of Suffolk; three sons, Emmett M. Applewhite, Ashton Eugene Applewhite, Jr., and Lloyd Allen Applewhite, all of Courtland ; three sisters, Mrs. Lucy Moore Vaughan, Mrs. C.W. Dickens and
Mrs. Ludie Whitehead, all of Courtland; one brother, B.R. Applewhite, also of Courtland; and several grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in the chapel of W.J.M. Holland and Sons on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Otis L. Gilliam, pastor of the deceased officiated, assisted by Rev. L.M. Kanipe, pastor of the Courtland Baptist Church.

Interment was in the Courtland Cemetery, the pallbearers being Claude Applewhite, T.B. Bell, J. Letcher Eley, Frank Marks, Emmett Vaughan, Roland Vaughan, Thomas Vaughan and Arthur Whitehead.
