Mother-in-Law of Senator Aiken Dies at Putney

PUTNEY – Mrs. Nellie (Kathan) Howard, 80, mother-in-law of U. S. Senator George D. Aiken, died at her home in Putney Village Wednesday. She had been in failing health several years.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock in Putney Federated Church with burial in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Members of the Order of Eastern Star will meet at Masonic Hall at 1:45 to attend the services in a body.

She was born in Dummerston Sept. 13, 1870, a daughter of Gardner S. and Martha (Lane) Kathan. Her paternal ancestors were the first settlers of the town of Dummerston, establishing a home on the so-called Harry Tarbox farm in 1752. She married Herbert C. Howard April 7, 1894. He died Oct. 8, 1940.

Mrs. Howard leaves two daughters and one son – Beatrice, wife of Senator Aiken, and Maxine and Russell Howard, all of Putney. She also leaves four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Howard was a charter member of the Auxiliary to Putney post, American Legion, and a member of the O. E. S.
