Son of James McAnally "Mack" and Elizabeth "Bettie" Wilkerson Messer, born in Goingsnake Dist. IT. John's mother died when he was about 8 years old and he was raised by his father and step mother, Nancy Alberty Messer.
His sister Rachel b. 1869, married Austin Lively Maples and died Aug. 9, 1894. He had 2 half brothers and three half sisters - George,Ruth,Charles,Lizzie and Lucinda.

He married Jenette Duval Dec. 4, 1894, at the home of Mrs. J. H. Gibson, Grove, IT.

Children born to this union:
Raymond D. Messer 11/20/1897,(IT Dawes 26340);
Clarence C. Messer 1/9/1900, (IT Dawes 26339);
Paul Virgil Messer 12/16/1901, (New Mexico Territory Dawes 26341);
William Woodcock Messer 5/19/1904, (New Mexico Territory Dawes 4647M).

A daughter named Violet may have been their first born, but died as an infant. However, she is not mentioned in the Dawes packet for John H. Messer.

John was known as J. H. Messer. He was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church and sent to New Mexico by his bishop. He planned to return to his land in IT (now Oklahoma),but his health issues made it impossible.

He bcame a widower in May 1904, when his beloved Jenette died nine days after giving birth to their youngest son.

The family never returned to live on their allotted land in the Cherokee Nation Oklahoma.
