Martha was the fourth child of William and Emma (Claymon) Decker. The family moved from Illinois to Spokane County, Washington sometime between 1900 and 1910.

Motto married Arthur E. Houchins March 12, 1911 in Spokane County, Washington. He was the son of Edward and Mary Houchins. They had one child, Virginia Hollis Houchins. Sometime between 1920 to 1928 the family moved from Washington to Los Angeles County, California. The marriage ended in divorce about 1936.

Motto married Frederick Paul"Bud" Stechow sometime between 1940 and 1949. That marriage was very short-lived, ending in divorce.

Motto's third husband was George Herbert Carr. They were married 23 April 1953 in Santa Monica, California.

Motto worked from the 1930's to the 1950's as a ward maid at Olive View Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Los Angeles.
