~OBITUARY OF MRS. PHEBE C. THORNTON

HIAWATHA -- Mrs. Phebe C. THORNTON, 73, Hiawatha, died late Wednesday, April 3, at a Hiawatha hospital where she was admitted earlier Wednesday. She had a heart problem.

She was born July 10, 1911, at Laroche, Morocco, North Africa, the daughter of Frederick C. and Nellie Olson ENYART. Her parents were missionaries in Africa 35 years.
She moved to the United States at the age of 15 to finish high school at Powhattan where she lived with the Elroy Tillotson family. She later lived with Etta Skulley while she attended Highland Junior College.

Mrs. THORNTON was a member of First United Methodist church and United Methodist Women at Hiawatha.

She was married to Wilbert THORNTON August 19, 1932 at Hiawatha. He survives. A daughter, Kathleen Rae THORNTON, died July 31, 1967.

Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Arlowyn FANKHANEL, Topeka, Mrs. Loretta STAPLETON, Gillette, Wyoming, Sylvia THORNTON, Hiawatha, Mrs. Ilene FLESHMAN, Lebanon, Missouri, Mrs. Mary Ann WENZ, Falls City, Nebraska, and Mrs. Linda WAGNER, Mound City, Missouri; four sons, Fred THORNTON, Dallas, Texas, Lanny THORNTON, Lansing, Michigan, Gary THORNTON, Wamego, and Stanley THORNTON, Hiawatha; a sister, Mrs. Ruth LONG, Springdale, Arkansas; a brother, Charles ENYART, Security, Colorado; 32 grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery at Hiawatha. Mrs. THORNTON will lie in state until 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Casselman-Meek funeral Home in Hiawatha and later at the church until service time. Relatives and friends will meet from 7 until 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund in Hiawatha.
