Name sake of Lee's Summit, Missouri. Post Master of Big Cedar, Jackson, Missouri 1855-1856. Dr. Pleasent John Graves Lea was born in Jefferson County, Tennessee and later in 1849 settled in Jackson County, Missouri on 800 acres and was the town physican. In 1862 he had his family moved back to Tennessee. Dr Lea was tortured and murdered in 1862 by the Kansas Jayhawkers or Red Legs. He also had his home burned along with others. In 1865 the people of then town Strother changed the name of the town to Lea's Summit in his honor. It became known as Lee's Summit by miss-spelling by rail road sign painters and confusion with General Robert E Lee.
