Old Resident Passes at Hemphill, Tx. - Ezekiel P. Padgett, at one time a leading member of the local bar, native of Appling county and well known throughout Wiregrass Georgia, died at Hemphill, Texas, 10-28-1937. The belated news came to his nephew, Sheriff Henry L. Padgett in a letter from his grandson, Joe Easterlin, son of Mrs. Daisy Padgett Easterlin.

Col. Padgett was born near old Holmesville, then county seat of Appling, on 05-19-1856, son of James and Cynthia Tuten Padgett, both of whom had come here from SC. He had nine weeks schooling in an oldfield school as a basis for a professional career that was quite successful in that day. He studied law at night under Vernon E. McLendon, Esq., while cutting timber to support his family, and was admitted to the bar in Baxley in open court in 1875.

Married in 1873 - In 1873, he was married to Mrs. Levicey Moody McLellan by Esquire Elias Branch in Baxley, and to them were born two daughters, Mrs. Georgia Buenavista Barnwell, of Macon, Ga., and Mrs. Daisy Easterlin, of Hemphill, Tx., both of whom survive him, and two sons, Vernon E., and Peter M.., both of whom preceded him to the grave. There are a number of grandchildren.

Zeke Padgetts' native ability and common sense, together with his wonderful energy and industry, made him a successful lawyer at a time when the Baxley bar included men of prominence, and he established a practice that extended over much of the Wiregrass region. He attended the courts of Appling, Coffee, Clinch, Glynn, Dodge, Irwin, Pierce, Ware, and Wayne and appeared in much of the important litigation of the period.

About 36 years ago, Col. Padgett left Baxley for Texas and located at Hemphill. He engaged in various activities there, and has served as judge of the county court as well as positions of prominence here in Appling at this time, Henry L. Padgett practicing law. Two nephews occupy having been sheriff for some years, and Clinton C. Padgett now being County School Superintendent. Other relatives on both sides are to be found in the county whose names are not known to the writer at this time. Mrs. Emmie Leggett is now the only survivor of the family of James and Cynthia Padgett.
