Ethel May Willard was born June 28, 1889 in Texas, daughter of Exum Enestes Willard (1860-1948) and Lura Belle Flemons (1866-1938).

The 1900 Federal Census for Wichita County, Texas shows Ethel Willard, age 10, born June 1889 in Texas; living with her father, Exum, age 40, born December 1860 in Illinois; and her mother, Lura, age 33, born July 1866 in Illinois. Also living in the household were Ethel's siblings: Walter, age 12, born August 1887 in Texas; Sarah, age 8, born July 1891 in Texas; Roy, age 4, born July 1893 in Texas; and Neva, age 4, born March 1896 in Texas.

On August 15, 1909, Ethel married William Franklin 'Bill' Detlefs, who was born February 15, 1887 in Remsen, Iowa (Plymouth County), son of Hans Detlefs and Mary Dickson.

The 1910 Federal Census for Justice Precinct 2, Texas (Wichita County) shows Will Detlefs, a farmer, age 23, born in Iowa; and his wife, Ethel, age 20, born in Texas. Will was a first-generation American as both his parents had immigrated to the United States from Germany.

The 1930 Federal Census for Precinct 3, Texas (Wichita County) shows William F. Detlefs, pumper for the city water department, age 40, born in Iowa; and his wife, Ethel, age 39, born in Texas. Living with them were their four children: Thomas Willard Detlefs, age 19; Frances Detlefs, age 17; Helen L. Detlefs, age 15; and Neva Viola Detlefs, age 14; all born in Texas. In addition, Ethel's niece, Ethel F. Willard, age 3 years 7 months, born in Texas, was living with the family.

The 1940 Federal Census for Iowa Park, Texas (Wichita County) shows William F. Detlefs, city marshall, age 53, born in Iowa; and his wife, Ethel, age 50, born in Texas. Living with them was their daughter, Viola, a saleslady in a florist shop, age 24, born in Texas.

Ethel and William and their children attended the First Christian Church in Iowa Park, Texas and William served the church as a Deacon. The church was established in 1891 with 22 charter members, including Ethel's maternal grandparents. Ethel's parents, Lura and Exum, also were quite active in the early beginnings of the church. ,

William died June 6, 1964 in Wichita Falls, Texas (Wichita County) and was buried in Iowa Park, Texas (Wichita County) in the Highland Cemetery. Mrs. Ethel Detlefs, 90, a longtime resident of Iowa Park, died Sunday in aLlano hospital. Services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Iowa Park First Christian Church with the Rev. Clyde Markee, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery under direction of Tanner-Aulds Funeral Home.

Born July 28, 1889 in Archer County, Mrs. Detlefs lived in Iowa Park most of her life until she moved to Odessa 14 years ago where she lived seven years. She had resided in Llano seven years. She was a former member of the First Christian Church here. Her husband, Bill, an area law enforcement officer, died here in 1964. She is survived by a son, Johnny of Tow; a daughter, Frances (Mrs. Jack) Scott of Odessa; two sisters, Mrs. Neva Carter of Albuquerque, N.M. and Mrs. Winnie DeSpain of Austin; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
