An obituary for Hazel May Althouse was carried in the South Bend Tribune on 07 Jan 1929 and it reads: "Mrs. John J. Althouse. Mrs. Hazel May Althouse, age 40, died in the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. E. Nelson, 107 West Dayton street, at 8:30 o'clock this morning. She had been ill a year of tuberculosis. She was born in Allegan County, Michigan, May 24, 1868, and came to South Bend 15 years ago from Michigan. Surviving are her husband, John J. Althouse, of this city; her mother, Mrs. Jane Elwell, of Lawton, Mich.; seven children, Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Birdie Pierce and ray, Ruby, Charles, Margaret and Harold Althouse, all of South Bend; two sisters, Mrs. Minerva Cross, of Allegan, and Mrs. Dina Parish, of Decatur, Mich., and one brother, Claude Elwell, of Mattawan, Mich., one half-brother, George McKibbey, of Lawton, also survives. The body may be viewed in the G. O. Gaff funeral home." The birth year in this obituary is incorrect as she was born in 1888 not 1868 and the name of her sister should read Nina not Dina Parish. O. Gaff funeral home at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Burial will be in Riverview cemetery. The body may be viewed in the funeral home." Hazel was the daughter of Burton and Jane (Reames) Elwell.
