James Edward Cochran or Ed as he was called was the only child of James Bryant Cockrum and Matilda Francis Stout Cockrum. Ed lost his father when he was three and was raised by his step father Hobart Johnson.

Ed was, in the truest sense of the word, a warrior. The military life suited him. On 8/28/1935 at the age of 20, he joined the Army and the day after his commitment was up to the Army, he joined the Marines. Twenty two years later in 8/31/1957 he retired at Cherry Point NC with the rank of Captain. Ed fought in the bloodiest part of the war in the Pacific. He saw action in Namur Island, Kwajalein Atoll, Marshal Island, Eniwetok, Saipan, Tnian Islands, Iwo Jima, and Guam. He won a Purple heart and a Gold Star on Iwo Jima and Bronze for leading platoon on Saipan and Guada Canal. He made the front page of Stars and Strips with his washing machine made out of a jacked up jeep and a empty fuel drum. He liked his uniforms "GI" even in the middle of the War in the Pacific.

Stationed in Georga he met and married Annie C. Crosby. In 1950 they adopted a son Michael Sean Cockrum. In the late 50's they were divorced.

After retiring, Ed settled in North Carolina. He married Glendola Louivina Gourley after his divorce and in 1960 a son was born. He named his son after his Father. In about five years a daughter was born. It is believed he named her after his mother and his favorite aunt.

On the 14th of June 1977 the warrior went to his rest.
