Irene was baptized in 1920 at St John Ev Lutheran Church in Rock Springs, where she was a life-long member, and was confirmed in her faith at St John in 1934. She also sang in the church choir.
On Aug 17, 1941, Irene was united in marriage to Gilbert C Baumgarten. This marriage was blessed with five children. Irene was a wonderful cook and baker. She enjoyed gardening, music, sewing, embroidery and reading. Irene was a member of Rock Springs Homemakers.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Hilda Schwanke and Viola Werpel; brothers, Ray and Fred Gurgel.
She is survived by her husband, Gilbert; children, Thomas (Mary), Reedsburg, Gary (Rose), Onalaska, Linda (John Watson) Baumgarten, Williamsburg, VA, Diane (David) Gade, Reedsburg, and Myrna (Jim) Weickgenant, Baraboo; grandchildren, Angela (Dan) Kilbert, Elizabeth (Damien) Stevens, Rebecca (Josh) Savoy, Jessica and Alison Baumgarter, and Zach and Jordan Taylor; step-grandchildren, Norm and Cathy Couture, Nicholas (Tyson) Marquardt, and Erica Weickgenant; three step great-grandchildren; brother, Martin Gurgel; sisters, Laura Joachim, Delores "Polly" Steinhorst and Marion "Peggy" (Earl) Powers, all of Baraboo; nieces and nephews, along with other relatives and friends.
Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, North Freedom.
