J. Richard Remmel, 88, formerly of Waynesboro, died at Tavistock, Ontario, Canada on December 25, 2009.
He was born February 12, 1921 at Stoufferstown, a son of Joseph Penrose Remmel and Ethel Hoover Remmel.
Mr. Remmel graduated from Chambersburg High School in 1938.
He was a tool and die maker at Landis Tool Co. and later at Frick Company. From 1953 until his retirement, he was a tree surgeon.
Along with his wife, Ida Erb Campbell, whom he married in 1947, he raised fresh produce for many customers on his farm one mile north of Waynesboro.
Mr. Remmel enjoyed restoring and operating his 1914 Frick Eclipse steam traction engine.
He is survived by three daughters: Jean Bear and husband Sam of Washington, PA, Barbara Baxter and husband Herb of Fairbanks, Alaska, Mary Elizabeth Roth and husband Charles of New Hamburg, Ontario and a son, David J. and wife Shelley of Harrisburg, PA. Grandchildren are Charlie (Meg) and Andy Bear, Jay and Ruby Baxter, Kevin Roth, and Alex Remmel. Richard became a great grandfather to Bella Bear shortly before his death.
Mr. Remmel was preceded in death by his wife, brother Clarence William, and granddaughter Lisa Roth (2009).
A funeral service was held on Sunday December 27, 2009 at North Easthope Reformed Mennonite Church, Amulree, Ontario with Allan Bankert officiating.
Services were held Thursday, December 31, 2009 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 South Broad St., Waynesboro, with Glenn Gross officiating. Burial followed in Falling Spring Reformed Mennonite Cemetery, Chambersburg.
