RUFUS ANDREW (R.A.) SMOTHERS Obituary





RUFUS ANDREW (R.A.) SMOTHERS, 84, passed away quietly Saturday, December 26th, at his home in Rose Hill, Texas, where he had lived the last 57 years. He was a most patriotic man who loved his family, country, and community. He was born in West University Place on December 27, 1924. R.A. attended Pershing Junior High School and Lamar High School, where he graduated after returning from 39 months of service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. R.A. began work as a high school student at Shell Development, and returned to work there after the war. He retired in 1985 after 42 years with Shell. He and June Davis were married in 1948. R.A. lived a life of service to his family, community, and neighbors, especially through his numerous contributions to the Rose Hill Fire Department, which he helped to found, and to the Rose Hill United Methodist Church. R.A. was an ardent gardener and kept his yard as beautiful as a park.He was preceded in death by his parents, R.A. Smothers, Sr., and Annie Smothers, his sisters Lovie Robertson and Mary Allen, and his brother, Daniel Smothers, grandsons Cody Tyson and Trey Tilley, and son-in-law Joseph Marcello.He is survived by his wife of 61 years, June Smothers, and his four daughters, Doris Marker of Portland, Oregon, Nona Swonke and her husband John of Magnolia, Jody Smothers-Marcello of Sitka, Alaska, and Holly Tilley and her husband Wallace of Cypress. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Heather Tyson, Joshua Tilley, Jacob Tilley, and Laurinda Marcello, six nephews, and three nieces.Pallbearers will be Joshua Tilley, Jacob Tilley, Laurinda Marcello, John Thomson, Brian Nichols, and Rolf Kerr. Honorary pallbearers are Elroy Hirsch, Carl Bueckner, Delvin Schauer, P.J. Matranga, Andy Allen, and LeRoy Brogdon.Visitation will be held from 5-8 pm Sunday, December 27 at Klein Funeral Home Tomball. Services are scheduled for 2pm Monday, December 28 at Rose Hill United Methodist Church, 21022 Rose Hill Church Road, Tomball, Texas 77377, with Reverend Kay Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
