Richard Eugene Birdwell, Sr., 79, of Huffman, TX, died Monday, January 25, 2010.
He was born to the late John W. and Garnett Birdwell, February 20, 1930, in Newark, OH and grew up in So. Pittsburgh, TN. He moved to Houston at the age of 12 and attended San Jacinto High School. After serving four years in the United States Navy, he married F. Justine Dorsett Birdwell on March 6, 1954, where they lived in Huffman for over 39 years.
He entered the Houston Fire Department in 1953 where he retired as District Chief in 1984. After retirement, he worked as an arson investigator for Harris Co. and Montgomery Co. for 19 years. He was a member of the Houston Fire Department Memorial Committee. His hobbies after retirement included motorcycles, airplanes and travelling the country in a motor home.
Richard is survived by three children: Suzanne and Gary Combs, Debra and Dale Earley, of Huffman, TX; and Richard and Diane Birdwell, Jr. of Conroe, TX. He is survived by his grandchildren: Robert Berry, Scott Berry, Matt (Kate) Earley, Justin Ramsey, Jeff (Veronica) Owen, Lauren (Lance) Kempf, Jillian (Nathan) Bryant, Megan Duffield, Jyssica (Mikell) Minus. Great Grand children: Taylor, Mattison, Madeline, Ella, Tristen, London, Kynnerly, Logann, Corban, Kyan, and Olivia.
Predeceased by brother John W. Birdwell, Jr.
Rosewood Funeral Home will host a viewing and visitation Thursday January 28th from 5 - 8 pm and funeral services January 29th at 9:30 am.
Burial will be held at 11:30 am at the Houston National Cemetery.
