Rites Today For Longtime Resident

Funeral services will be held today, Friday, at 2 p.m. at Craig Congregational Church for Iva May Collett, who died Monday after being ill for more than a year.

An oldtime resident in Paradise, Mrs. Collett was a source of information on local schools. She began teaching here in 1910 and was the only teacher at local schools continuously for the next 32 years.

When she first began teaching here Paradise was divided into three school districts. She taught in the old school at what is now the corner of Elliott and Copeland Rds.

She drove a horse and buggy to and from school, picking up children along the way. Later she used her car to transport students.

Mrs. Collett was presented an honorary life membership by the Paradise Elementary Parent Teacher Association in 1956.

Born Mar. 20, 1874, in Salem County, Ill., as a child she lived in eastern Kansas and Carthage, Mo. She graduated from high school in 1893 in Jasper, Mo., and kept books for her father until 1897.

In 1897 she took the county teacher's examination and taught in Jasper four years. She was teaching in Parsons, Kan., when she resigned to come to Paradise.

She and her family were active members of Craig Church and she married Oren Collett in the church in 1934. She had held numerous positions in the church.

She was a member of the Butte County Retired Teachers Association and the Friendly Friday Club.

Survivors are her husband, Oren of Paradise, and a brother, Clarence H. Charlton of Mentone.

The Rev. Robert Bitz of Craig Church will officiated at the services. Burial will be in Paradise cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Chapel of the Pines.

Pallbearers are: Frank Hall, Alex Shand, Oak D. Wood, Russell Hart, Nathaniel Breu, and Frank Hillis.
