Born at home in West Chester in 1915, he was the son of the late Moulton H. Davis and Linnie Remster Davis.
Boyd was a lifelong resident of West Chester.
As a youngster, he began working with his parents and brothers at the family lumber yard and gasoline business, which started in 1909.
They operated a lumber yard and gasoline station in West Chester as well as a chain of gas stations throughout Chester County. With his uncle, Brady Davis, he had a truck route serving gasoline and kerosene to farmers throughout Chester County.
In 1955, he became the sole owner of the oil business, M.H. Davis Estate Oil Co. Inc. and, with his sons, built it into one of the largest family-owned companies in the history of West Chester, with sales of over 30 million gallons a year.
Boyd was a proud member of the famous West Chester High School football team (1931), the only one undefeated for the entire season in the Philadelphia Suburban League. Their record still stands today.

Boyd and Nelda were recently recognized by the West Chester Methodist Church as the couple who had been members the longest.
For many years he was chairman of the Board of Adjustment for East Bradford Township.
In 1949, Boyd and Nelda purchased a beachfront cottage in Manasquan, N.J., and enjoyed vacationing there for over 50 years. Boyd was a longtime trustee of the Manasquan Beach Improvement Association and a member of the Manasquan River Yacht Club. They traveled together all over the United States, Canada and the rest of the world.
Boyd always had time for his many friends and helped many to achieve their goals.
Although he did not attend college himself, he and Nelda were proud that all three of their children graduated from Dickinson College, Carlisle.
He still owned the house in which he was born in 1915.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Boyd Jr. and Brooke and his wife, Linda; daughter, Nelda Jane Helmstaedter and her husband, Bob; grandchildren, Brooke Jr., Amanda, Kirk and Leslie; and his older brother, Moulton H. Davis Jr.
