Served in Ambulance Section 647 during WW1 as an ambulance driver. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for making multiple daylight trips on 19 & 20 April 1918, over an exposed road to recover wounded soldiers, near Seicheprey, France. On one trip he and his ambulance were blown from the road by an explosive shell. He returned on foot.
