ROY LEE STEWART Jr.
STEWART, ROY LEE, JR., age 86, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on Friday, November 20, 2009.
He was born in Los Angeles, California on April 14, 1923. He was the son of Roy Lee and Annie May Zimmerman Stewart.
Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife of 62 years Mary Elise Stewart; son Roy L. Stewart, III (Teresa); daughter Lisa Stewart; granddaughters Lindsey and Kristin.
At an early age, Mr. Stewart and his family moved to Birmingham where he attended Mountain Brook Grammar School, Phillips High School, and the University of Alabama. Before graduating from college, Mr. Stewart served in World War II with the 84th Infantry, "The Rail Splitters." After the war, he returned to the University of Alabama where he earned his bachelor's degree in metallurgy. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Mr. Stewart worked for Stockham Valves and Fittings for over 30 years. He belonged to the Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church where he was a member of the choir for many years. He served on the board of the St. Andrews Society of the Middle South. Mr. Stewart was recognized as Master Model Railroader #407 with the National Model Railroad Association and was an active member of "The Wrecking Crew", a Birmingham-based model railroad club.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 24. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church.
