Alfred "Chet" Chester Jensen

Alfred "Chet" Chester Jensen, 85, who devoted hundreds of hours to the Southside Senior Center, died of cancer on Nov. 27, 2005, at Aspen Meadows Nursing Home.

He was born July 22, 1920, on the homestead outside of Edgar in an area known as Poverty Flats to Nels and Anna Jensen. As a young man he rode bucking horses in rodeos.

Following graduation from Edgar High School in 1939, he worked the farm while his brothers were in the service. In 1946, as the brothers returned home, he enlisted in the Army and served in the Japan Occupation.

On March 8, 1949, he married Phyllis Sullender in Bozeman. They remained at the family farm on Poverty Flats until 1969. During the winters, he worked the campaign at the Western Sugar Factory. Following the family move to Joliet in 1969, he worked full-time at the Sugar Factory. In the early 1970s, Mr. and Mrs. Jensen moved to Billings.

He became involved in the development of the Southside Senior Center and dedicated hundreds of hours as president and board member, remaining active until his death.

For 16 years, he and his daughter, Penny, trained and raced thoroughbreds in Montana and Wyoming. His health dictated a move to the Aspen Meadows Assisted Living center in 2004.

Survivors include his wife; children, Ramona Breshears, Robert Raincloud of Olympia, Wash., Fred Jensen and Penny Haynes; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, in Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Burial will be in Rockvale Cemetery. A reception will follow at 2 p.m. at the Southside Senior Citizens Center.

Donations may be made in his name to the Southside Senior Citizens Center.
