Mary Ellen Gardner was born in Rochester, New York to gunsmith Charles L. Gardner (1820-1861) and Ellen Donovan (1824-1911). The Gardners moved to Flint, Michigan before the Civil War; after Charles died in the Union Army, the family moved to Chicago, where she met and married printer and newspaperman Isaac Leggett Hart. After a sojourn in Eldora, Iowa, where Isaac founded the Eldora Herald, the family moved to the new town of Pipestone, Minnesota in 1879.

Isaac and Mary Hart had eight children, of whom six survived to adulthood and have been identified: Lillian, Gardner, Mable, Charles, Ralph, and Kittie.
