Mr. Hertling, a lifelong resident of St. Louis, was co-owner of the lumber and hardware business for several years in the 1960s. Later, he worked in sales at Stockman Lumber Co. in St. Louis for about five years before he retired in the mid-1970s.
He began his career in the lumber industry in the 1940s with C.J. Reinecky Lumber Co. in St. Louis.
He was a past secretary and treasurer of the International Fraternal Order of Lumbermen; a past president of the Two-by-Two's Club at Evangelical Congregation of the Redeemer Church on Kingshighway; and a past president of the Broom and Lemon Dance Club in St. Louis. He was also a former officer of the Lemay Jefferson Barracks Lions Club.
Among the survivors is his wife of 62 years, Hildegard Maier Hertling
