Dr. Halsted McLure Stone, 79, of 1079 J.A. Cochran Bypass, died Saturday, March 24, 2007, at his residence.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Purity Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Don Simpson officiating. There will be a private interment at a later date.

He was born October 22, 1927, in Chester County, SC, the son of the late William Cornwell Stone and Mary Love McLure Stone. He graduated from The Citadel and Medical University of South Carolina in 1949. He did his post-graduate study at the Medical College of Virginia, and started practice in Chester in 1950.

He served several terms as chief of staff of Chester County Hospital. He was Board Certified by the American Board of Family Practice. He served as councilor for the 5th District on the Board of Trustees for 10 years, and then was chairman for three years. He then served as President of the South Carolina Medical Association and President of the South Carolina Medical Care Foundation and the South Carolina Academy of Family Practice. He delivered about 5,000 babies in his 55 years of practice.

He served his country in the U.S. Army as a Regimental Surgeon of the 7th Regiment, 3rd Division in Korea, earning the Combat Medical Badge and The Bronze Star.
He served his community as President of the United Fund, President of the Jaycees, Board member of the Chester Little Theater and the Chester County Cancer Society. He was President of the Old Purity Society. He was chairman of the Board of Deacons and an Elder of Purity Presbyterian Church. He saw patients at the Good Samaritan Clinic as a volunteer. He was a team physician for Lewisville High School and Chester High School for over 25 years. He was a 37 year member of IPTAY. He was a member of the committee that created The Chester Dixie Youth Little League and former commissioner for the Chester Metropolitan District. He was a recipient of the Distinquished Service Award for The South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians.
