Creighton University news release in announcing 2014's annual Henri J. Renard, S.J., Endowed Lecture in Philosophy:

The lecture series is named to honor the Rev. Henri J. Renard, S.J. (1894-1981), a respected and loved professor of philosophy at Creighton University during the years 1947-1969. Fr. Renard received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from St. Louis University, his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Institute of Philosophy and Theology of Posillipo, Italy, and his Doctor of Sacred Theology degree from the Gregorian University at Rome, Italy. Many Creighton students have used philosophy books authored by Fr. Renard as they pursued the traditional sequence of philosophy courses within the philosophical system of St. Thomas Aquinas.

Fr. Renard was a philosopher, an author, a musician, a retreat master, a lover of art, a spiritual director, and a teacher. At his funeral Fr. Renard's nephew, Fr. John Renard, S.J., summed up his life in this way: "Henri knew he had received much and he refused to bury his gifts. He refined them, enjoyed them, and spread that enjoyment around as one who believed in the Incarnation."

In 1966, Father Henri Renard, S.J., professor of philosophy at Creighton University, and a dedicated writer, scholar, and inspiring teacher, was honored at Creighton on his 50th Jubilee in the Society of Jesus. Honors included the publication of "Wisdom in Depth," a collection of 15 philosophical and theological essays, written by former students, and with a forward by Bishop John Wright, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a life sketch by Fr. John Jelinek, S.J., chairman of the Creighton philosophy department.

At Creighton, Father taught over 5,000 undergraduate students, and "had a tremendous influence in leading his students to a love of wisdom and of St. Thomas Aquinas," Fr. Jelinek said.

At the outbreak of World War II, when all the Americans at the Gregorian University left Italy, Fr. Renard returned to St. Louis University to instruct Jesuit scholastics. After his St. Louis tenure, Fr. Renard was assigned to the philosophy faculty at Creighton. The series of philosophy books which he authored began with The Philosophy of Being in 1943. Other books came, and "more and more Catholic colleges began using his books in the classroom. The Philosophy of Being alone has gone through 12 printings and has sold over 10,000 copies," Fr. Jelinek said.
