Samuel was born in Fairfield, Iowa the son of William Meeks Young and Nancy H Glenn Young. On May 10, 1866 he married Lydia Ann Freshour, Their child Grace Ann Young was born in 1887. During the Civil War Samuel enlisted in the Union Army, Company D, Iowa 29th Infantry Regiment on 01 Dec 1862. He mustered out on 10 Aug 1865 at New Orleans, LA.
Samuel and Lydia had eight children, five of which survived to adulthood.
