Betty A. Belew
Betty Almon Belew, age 102, of Elgin, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2012.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at Elkins East Chapel. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elgin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bill Smith and the Rev. Randy Burbank officiating. Burial will be at Belew Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family members.
Mrs. Belew is survived by daughters, Sherry Belew and Judy Belew Woolley; grandchildren, Patrick Woolley (Regina), Beth Clemmons (Bobby Jr.) and Becky Woolley; great-grandchildren, Blake Woolley, Nicholas Clemmons and Brenna Clemmons; a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, D.S. "Bus" Belew; son-in-law, Lee Woolley; great-grandson, Justin Woolley; five brothers; and three sisters.
Betty was appointed in 1967 by then-Gov. Lurleen Wallace to fill the unexpired term of her husband on the Lauderdale County Commission. She was a founding member of Elgin United Methodist Church and served many years as a Sunday school teacher and in other church offices. She enjoyed playing board games, working crossword puzzles, bird watching and visiting with friends and family. She also was an avid Auburn Tigers and Atlanta Braves fan.
