Helen Genevieve Alexander, 87, a resident of The Dalles, died at a local care center on Tuesday, June 10, 2003.
She was born Jan. 12, 1916, in Wamic, the oldest of four children to Richard Lucas and Maude Amanda (Chastain) Gerity.
She graduated from Maupin High School in 1934 then attended Normal School in Monmouth, graduating in 1936. She returned to Wamic and started teaching in Wamic, Tygh Valley, Maupin, Chenowith, Court Street and Colonel Wright Elementary schools, retiring after 38 years of teaching.
She married Glenn Alexander on May 28, 1938 and he preceded her in death in 1981.
She enjoyed her family and grandchildren, knitting and china painting. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Maupin Garden Club and the Retired Teacher's Association.
She is survived by her daughter, Glenda Fulton, Portland; her son, Richard Alexander, Lincoln City; four grandchildren and their spouses, Katie and Bruce Anthony, Mosier; Michelle Fulton, Portland; Judy and Mike Urness and Jennifer and Will Ford, both of The Dalles; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom and Art Gerity and one infant sister, Emma.
Graveside memorial services will be held at Parklawn Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, with Asa Jenson officiating. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Smith Callaway Chapel in care of arrangements.
