George Washington "Gideon" McWhirter was born November 4, 1861 in Boonesville, Lincoln County, Tennessee and died November 28, 1940 in Plainview, Hale County, Texas. He was the son and last child of John E. McWhirter and Frances Noah of Lincoln County, Tennessee. His mother died about a year after he was born and his father died about 1871, when he was about 10 years old and therefore orphaned at an early age. He was reared by relatives in Lincoln County, Tennessee. At some time before 1900 he removed to Italy, Ellis County, Texas where he had brothers residing. On May 27, 1902 he married Maude Lee Park in Norman, Cleveland County, Oklahoma and on January 5, 1906 he had a son and only child George Edwin McWhirter in Maypearl, Ellis County, Texas. By 1910 he, his wife, and young son resided in Waxahachie, Ellis County, Texas where he remained a resident through 1930. During this time he worked in mercantile at McDuffy's Mercantile Store in Waxahachie. He loved horses and also traded in mules. By 1940 he and his wife had removed to Plainview, Hale County, Texas where he died November 28, 1940 of heart problems.
