She was the daughter of General James Hervey Simpson, United States Army and Elizabeth Sophie (Jane) Champlin (1821-1870). On October 22, 1860 as Mary Ellen Simpson, she married Octavius Knight in the District of Columbia. Place of birth from 1850 Buffalo, Erie County, New York Census is Wisconsin and from 1860 for same is New York.

Mrs. Octavius Knight Sr., died at the home of her son, Theodore R. Knight, 400 Elizabeth Avenue, on Monday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, after an illness of two years duration. Mrs. Knight was in her seventy-third year. She was born in Washington, D.C. and had been a resident of this town for the past two years. She is survived by seven children, Octavius Knight, T.R. Knight, of Westfield; Mrs. Harry E. Knight, of New York City; William E. Knight, of Pocantico Hills, New York; Arthur O. Knight, of Fanwood; Mrs. R.C. Synder and Edwin Q. Knight, of Washington, D.C. The remains were taken to Washington D.C., where the funeral services were held this afternoon. Interment was made in the family plot in the Washington cemetery.
