Irene Getman was born on the Bauer Farm at Kit Carson Colorado on June 4, 1921 to Joseph and Mary (Olinger) Mahlberg and died on January 25, 2010 at Kearney Nebraska at the age of 88. At age 8, she moved with her family to Minnesota where her father thought he would have better job opportunities. After 4 years they moved back to Kit Carson to the farm that they purchased.
In 1944 Irene married Jake Dodd. To this union 2 sons were born, Joe & Clyde (better known as Cub). Jake worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. Jake and Irene and the boys built a house in Kit Carson by themselves. Irene learned to lay bricks and worked right along side her husband. Jake was killed in an accident in December of 1961. Irene was left a single mother and worked as a waitress to make ends meet.
Irene married Frank Getman in 1967 at a ceremony attended by much of the town. Frank and Irene dressed in 1880s attire as did the guests at the wedding. Frank passed away in 1996.
Irene was a particular housekeeper and loved to have everything in it’s place. Her favorite color was orange. One time Jeannie asked what she wanted for Christmas and she said she wanted an orange dish and it had to be no more than 6 inches around. She always knew what just what she wanted.
Irene was a Sweetheart of the local VFW Auxiliary and was a faithful member. She played the mouth harp and guitar and was a State Champion bowler. She volunteered at the Kit Carson Museum and was very active at Kit Carson Days. She loved to take tickets at the dances and was a wonderful dancer. One of her proudest moments was dancing with her son, Joe at the Alumni Dance at age 84. The picture made the front page of the Cheyenne Wells paper and she sent Joe an extra copy as a keepsake.
Irene moved to live with Carol and Larry Kohart at Kohart’s Assisted Living in 2008 and in 2009 she moved to Prairie Pines Assisted Living in Eads. At both places she was treated like a Queen and will be missed. She moved to Nebraska in January to be near her family.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jake Dodd; her husband, Frank Getman; her son, Cub Dodd; and her sisters, Lillian Soisson, Lucille Geist, and Veronica Ambrosier.
She is survived by her son, Joe Dodd and his wife Jeannie of Sumner, Nebraska; 2 grandchildren, Michelle Pearson of Gibbon, Nebraska and Jake Dodd and his wife Sara of Sumner, Nebraska; 5 great grandchildren: Jericca Pearson, Alexis, Bailey, Cassie and Wyatt Dodd; Irene is also survived by several nieces and nephews to include: Jim Ambrosier, Vern White, Ronald White, Larry White, Rita St. Clair and Marilyn White.
