Elmer "Gib" Louis Gebhard

Sunday, July 16, 2006 at Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center. Elmer was born to Louis and Mathilda Gebhard on April 23, 1916 on their homestead in Joplin, Montana and later lived in Winton, Minn. The family moved to Duluth when Elmer was a young child. He grew up in Duluth and attended the Duluth Public Schools. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corp and worked in Gooseberry State Park as well as several other camps on the north Shore. Elmer was a veteran of World War II, serving in Panama, Nicaragua and The European Front. On July 14, 1944, he married his sweetheart Adeline Lehto in Duluth while on leave from the U.S. Army. After returning from the military he was employed by Sterling Motors and Chief Motors as an auto mechanic. Later he worked for the DMIR Railroad until retiring in 1979. Elmer had many talents and the ability to build beautiful and useful objects from scraps or throw away materials. He was the original recycler and pack rat. Remodeling and rebuilding his four-plex home and being a friend and landlord to many for over 50 years was one of his greatest enjoyments. He also loved to spend time in his vegetable garden and raspberry patch. His determination and strong spirit enabled him to continue these things he loved well into his 89th year. Elmer's life was all about hard work, honesty, kindness and love of home, family, friends and his Creator. He will always be remembered for his many stories about growing up in the early days of Duluth. He was a member of AARP and the American Legion Post 28. Elmer was preceded in death by his wife, Addie in 1992; his parents; sister, Ellen Golik and brother, Tom Gebhard. He is survived by his daughter, Fay Kaiser (Tony Jasmin) of Duluth; a nephew in Calif.; and many dear friends. The family wishes to thank Dr. Ryden, Dr. VanScoy, Lakeside Duluth Clinic Staff and Spruce Lane Staff at Chris Jensen Health Center for their compassionate care. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.
