Itzstein was a liberal politician in the early german democratic phase, called the "Vormärz". He initiated the "Hallgarten circle", a group of liberal democratics, which was one of the roots of the first german democratic
parliament, the "Frankfurter Nationalversammlung" 1848 to 1849 , in which he was a deputy. Later he had to go the Swiss exile and returned in his last years to his winery in Hallgarten, where he died. He is buried in Hallgarten. On the backside of his tombstone is the inscription: "Tired from the youth fights for german freedom here lies a brave heart".
