Robert E. Turner, 64, died Dec. 15, 2005, at Alaska Regional Hospital from complications of diabetes. Viewing was held with a service at Witzleben's Bragaw Chapel, 1707 S. Bragaw St. A military service was at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Mr. Turner was born Oct. 11, 1941, in Winthrop, Mass. He obtained his GED through his Army career, serving from 1966-68, and ending at Fort Richardson. He then served from 1973-1976 in the Army National Guard and was honorably discharged. In 1990, he went to work for and retired from the state of Alaska Department of Transportation. The family wrote: "(Everyone) knew Bob as a fun-loving man who would help anyone he could. ... Those who knew him will cherish his memory and know that he is in a better place where all physical problems are forgotten. Further, we all know that 'Big Daddy' is now looking over everyone and laughing at us all in good spirits with a fully functional body with no physical impairments. Children loved Bob, especially, as he loved to play with them, tease them, and talk to them all the time. He often called them 'twerps' and would give them all his famous bear hugs that could result in beard burns or tickles. He was a giant man of 6-feet-5-inches and weighed over 250 pounds, but was as gentle as a lamb. He was always happy. He loved to laugh and enjoy himself, and he made friends easily. We will all miss him greatly!"

Mr. Turner is survived by his caretakers for the past eight years, his sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and Harry Knipe; children, Heather Aerola, Shannon Turner and Martine Turner; former wife, Dorothy Turner; stepchildren, Frederick and Elora Knipe; nephew, John Chaplin and wife, Joelle, and their children, Brittany and Rachael; his sons with his first wife, Shelley, John Jr. and Justin; and grandchildren, Jessica and Alex Turner, Shelby Sturgeon, Martine Turner Jr., Carolyn Turner and Catherine Turner. Family and friends may leave memorial tributes at www.mem.com. Arrangements were provided by Witzleben Family Funeral Home.
