Asa was the son of Simeon Rice and Sally Bigelow. He married Polly Reed/Reid in 1811.

Asa and Polly (Reed) Rice, were natives of Massachusetts, and settled in New York in 1811, shortly after their marriage. Asa Rice was a prosperous farmer, well known and esteemed for his great moral worth. Both he and his wife were members of the Methodist Church and active in good works. They attained a venerable age, the former dying when eighty years old, and the latter at seventy-five.

Mr. Rice [Asa] was an "old-line" Whig, and in later life became a Republican. His nine children reached mature years, and three came West, namely, Henry, Columbus T. and James H. Rice.

Sally6 BIGELOW, dau of Asa5 (Joshua4, Joshua3, Joshua2, John1) and Rebecca (RICHARDSON) BIGELOW, was born 31 October 1766 at Brookfield, Worcester county, MA. She married (1) 01 January 1786 Simon Rice, who was born 21 September 1762 at Brookfield, son of Jason and Deborah (Force) Rice. He died 1812 at Sturbridge, and she married (2) 10 November 1818 Abijah Harrington, (his second marriage). He lived 1743-1821 and was a son of Jonas Harrington. She died 10 April 1853.

She married (1) 01 January 1786 Simon Rice, who was born 21 September 1762 at Brookfield, son of Jason and Deborah (Force) Rice.
