Son of Lt Charles and Elizabeth (Bradford) Whiting.

William was baptized in Hartford, CT

During the Revolution, he was Colonel of the 17th Regiment of New York Militia, which was largely raised through his own efforts. The 17th Regiment took part in the Battle of Saratoga, and he was present at the surrender of General John Burgoyne.

For twenty years William was a member of the Senate of the State of New York; and a Judge of the County Court for many years.

William married Abigail Carew 4/10/1754 in Norwich, Conn. Abigail died 5/20/1756 in Norwich, Conn.

William married Amy Lathrop 7/24/1757 in Norwich, Conn. In 1760 he bought a part of the Huntington property in Norwich and built the handsome house later owned and occuplied by Mrs. William Fitch.

In 1765 he purchased a large tract of land in Canaan, Columbia County, New York. His first house was of logs, but the successor was the one described in his great-granddaughter's novel "Queechy." Nearby he built a stone grist mill and saw mill.
