Even though Ephraim was 17-years-old when his father died, he and his brother, Antoine, 16-years-old, were considered "infant heirs," and Rolly Goodwin was appointed as their guardian.

According to my copy of this Family Tree, Ephriam was a widower with six children when he married Nancy Frances January 19, 1873. Nancy was 45 years old when she married Ephriam. They had no children of their own. Nancy Frances Gates, outlived Ephriam by 24 years, dying in 1913 aged 84 years.
They are buried beside each other (according to Nancy's obituary) in the Osborn Cemetery, Lovilla, Monroe County, Iowa.
