On April 2, 1942, he voluntarily terminated his employment with the police department and enlisted in the United States Air Force for military service during World War II.
At the conclusion of his enlistment, he was rehired by the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department and received his commission as a police officer on January 2, 1946. Upon completion of the academy, he was assigned to the following districts and divisions throughout his career. He was assigned to the Central Division, Personnel Division, Bureau of Field Operations, 4th, 8th, 7th & 8th (as one assignment), 3rd, 4th, Bureau of Field Operations, and finally the Office of the Chief on February 5, 1970, when he was appointed to the position of Chief of Police. He held that position from February 5, 1970, to July 22, 1982. When Chief Camp retired on July 23, 1982, he had completed 45.3 years of faithful and dedicated service to the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
Chief Camp was also a veteran of World War II and achieved the rank of Air Force Master Sergeant.
Chief Camp was the son of Fred H. and Elizabeth Camp. It should be noted that Chief Camp's father and brother were both police officers in the Saint Louis Police Department.
