Mary, age 88, died on Tuesday. She was born the only child of Ralph & Leona (Stultz) Hangen. Mary graduated from the University of Wichita in 1943 with a degree in liberal arts in science. She worked as a medical technologist during World War II at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C.. Mary and Miles were married in 1946 after Miles returned from the war. The couple moved to Manhattan, Ks, where Miles obtained his veterinary degree and Mary taught laboratory techniques to veterinary students at Kansas State University. They moved from Kansas to Chilton, WI in 1951 with their two children and set up a veterinary practice. In 1967, now with five children, they moved to Madison where Miles obtained a Ph.D. from UW-Madison. In 1973 they moved to Chapel Hill, NC, where Miles worked as an industrial veterinarian for Burroughs-Wellcome, and Mary worked for Quintiles, Inc. performing medical data collection. Miles died in 1988, after which Mary retired and moved to Middleton, WI., closer to three of her children. She enjoyed feeding the birds, watching sports and keeping tabs on her kids and grandkids. She is survived by her children, Ralph Agee (Launi) of Madison, VA, Susan Agee (Marcia) of Madison, WI, Robert Agee (Deb) of Black Earth, WI, and Karen Agee (Scott) of Middleton, WI; three grandchildren, Micah Agee (Chariann), Sarah Motl (Randy) and Brooke Agee; and three great-grandchildren, Gwen, Addison and Mathis. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Miles Agee Jr., DVM; and her youngest child, Julia. The family gives heartfelt thanks to the caregivers and staff at Attic Angel Place for the kind and respectful care they provided her with over the last 3 1/2 years of her life and to Dr. Jeanne Howard for providing care with grace and humor to a person who insisted on reading the data sheet for any recommended medication. A gathering in her memory was held in the Quiet Room at Attic Angel Place, Middleton, on Wednesday. We will all miss her common sense, wisdom and sense of humor. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made, in her name, to the Arthritis Foundation, Attic Angel Place or The Haw River Assembly (hawriver.org). Cress Funeral and Cremation Service assisted with arrangements.
