She was born November 26, 1917, on a farm near Gibbs, MO, the daughter of Glen and Alpha Babe (Homes) Crawford.
On June 27, 1941, in Helena, MT, she was united in marriage to Richard Noel Baitty of Queen City, MO. On their honeymoon they bummed rides on freight trains and went all over the United States. This was the height of their lives.
Surviving Doris are one sister, Gladys Fae Stump of Olathe, KS, and nephew, Glen Joe Stump and family of Olathe, KS.
Her husband, Richard Noel Baitty; her parents; one sister, Metalde Bunch of Helena, MT, and Arene Stump of LaPlata, MO, preceded her in death.
Doris attended rural grade schools at Benner at Gibbs, MO, and Lone Star at Millard, MO. She attended the LaPlata High School and graduated in 1936. She road raced her horse, Nellie, to school while a collie dog named Bobbie followed behind. She liked to ride fast and drive fast and enjoyed her life. She was a pro basketball star, received a Red Cross Life Award and gave dancing lessons. She worked in Kirksville around the Old Time Square for 25 years, including Montgomery Ward Credit Office, Powell's Shoe Store, Myers Brothers Shoe Store and the Shoe Box.
She belonged to the Downing Christian Church, the Ladies Auxiliary of Memphis, the Moose Lodge and Rebecca Lodges of Downing and LaPlata, MO.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Park View Memorial Gardens, Kirksville, MO. Reverend Larry Smith will officiate the service. Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home is in charge of services.
