Mr. McLain was born near Davis City and had lived in Des Moines for many years, returning there in 1985. He was retired from the Public Works Department in Des Moines and a member of the Masonic Lodge, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and the Des Moines Scottish Rite. In 1991 he was elected Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of the State of Iowa.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita; four sons, Gary and Karl, both of Des Moines, Jeffrey of St. Charles and Phillip of Isanti, Minn.; two daughters, Sherri Wilborn of Indianola and Phyllis James of Algonquin, Ill.; his father Charles of Davis City; a brother, Ralph of Redmond, Ore.; two sisters, Dorothy Boswell of Mesa, Ariz., and Beverly Scroggins of Nebraska City, Neb.; and 10 grandchildren.
