Age 56, passed away suddenly Friday, February 5, 2010 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was born July 26, 1953 in Detroit, the son of Robert James and Laurel Jean (Brudi) Smallwood.

Mark was employed by Gene Butman Ford in Ypsilanti for more than 37 years, starting when he was still in high school. He was Parts Manager. Mark was an avid NASCAR fan, often traveling to the races. He was involved with numerous local and state charities through the Fraternal Order of Eagles, benefiting the Alzheimers Association, Diabetes Association, and numerous cancer organizations and foundations, just to name a few. Mark's involvement with the Eagles spanned many years and many positions. This was his passion in life. He was Vice President, then voted President, and was most recently serving as Trustee of Aerie #2250. He was also serving as District Secretary and State Trustee. Mark was voted Eagle of the Year this year, his second time receiving that honor. Survivors include: his son, Michael (Cheryl) Smallwood of Lansing; his daughter, Karie (Scott) Gabara of Brighton; his granddaughters, Elizabeth and Kalista Gabara and Abigail Smallwood; his mother, Laurel Smallwood of WA; one sister, Sharon Peterson of NV; two brothers, David (Marilyn) Smallwood of Saline and John (Anna) Smallwood of WA; his significant other, Donna Hall; and other extended family. Mark was preceded in death by his father, Robert James Smallwood, one sister, Sylvia S. Moses and one brother, Robert James Smallwood Jr. Cremation has taken place. The memorial service will be 5:00 pm Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at Stark Funeral Service. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Fraternal Order of Eagles for various Eagle charities. Envelopes are available at the funeral home where the family will receive friends 3-5 pm Tuesday. There will also be a celebration of his life 4:30 pm Saturday, February 13, 2010 at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #2250, 2935 Holmes Road, Ypsilanti with dinner to follow at 6 pm.
