She was born June 23, 1924 in Tippecanoe County, IN, to the late Frederick and Grace (Rukes) Whippo. Following graduation from Fishers High School in 1942, Roma earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Education from Indiana State University in 1945 and a Master's of Science degree from Butler University. She taught high school English for 32 years, 16 at Fishers High School and 16 at Hamilton Southeastern High School, retiring in 1983.

She married Morris Peterson March 31, 1945 who predeceased her in 2008. Roma was a member of the Fishers Chapter #446 Order of Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron in 1955, and a member of Fishers United Methodist Church, serving as Treasurer for many years. She is survived by son, Michael (Paula); daughter-in-law, Caroline Peterson; grandchildren, Tony (Monica), Mark and Nicholas Peterson, Tim Lawson, Pat Schaefer (Ken); great-grandsons, Christopher Peterson, Johnathon Persinger; sisters, Betty Clark and Barbara Yaryan. In addition her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son, Kevin Peterson, and brothers, William and Paul Whippo. The family would like to extend a sincere and loving thank you to Tony and Monica Peterson, who lived with and cared for Roma in her home, following the death of her husband.
