Brendan died as a result of injuries sustained from a car crash. His friend, Mark Reedy, also died in the crash. (Please see his link at the end of this memorial).

Brendan graduated from Xavrian Brothers High School, in Westwood in 2006. At the time of his death, he was a senior at University of Miami of Ohio where he was the Student Manager for the Hockey Team and an Officer in the Young Democrats Group.

Brendan made headlines when he came out as a gay man, having been a part of the professional hockey world for most of his life. He often gave lectures to describe his story of conflict as a gay man in the largely homophobic world of professional sports.

Brendan had thought of becoming a sports coach, like his father and also had political aspirations after spending a summer as an intern for US Representative William D. Delahunt.

After coming out to his family, he found them to be his biggest supporters, especially his father, Brian who attended Toronto Pride with his son. When Brendan then came out to his teamates on the Miami University hockey team, they also gave him support and encouragement.

Making friends was easy for Brendan, with his outgoing and friendly personality. Even as a small child, he would always make friends with every other kid on the playground.

Mark Forest, a spokesman for Congressman Delahunt, said of Brendan, "He was an incredibly talented and gifted person who was smart beyond his years. Congressman Delahunt once said Brendan possessed a very special gift and deep compassion for others that would make him an outstanding public servant. He's probably one of the best interns we've ever had. He had a bright future ahead of him."

While the thought of a hockey management career was still a consideration, Brendan has also applied to law school with thought of a political career still in mind as well.

Brendan's good friend, Mark Reedy who also die in the crash.
