Jack G. Kirk, 74, of Terre Haute died at 7:53 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, in his residence. He was a dragline operator and the first employee of Peabody Universal Mine. He also organized the union for that mine.

He was born Jan. 18, 1931, in Miami, Okla., to Frank Kirk and Iva Fugate Kirk.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Daniel Kirk, whom he married Dec. 7, 1985; two sons, Jackie Kirk and his wife Marcia, and Darrell Kirk and his wife Loretta; a stepson, Scott Fisher and his wife Stephanie; two stepdaughters, Rene Lewis, and Jean Frankel and her husband Will; one brother, Larry Kirk and his wife Barbara; a special nephew, Jamie Kirk and his wife Felicia; seven grandchildren; six step grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Deborah Fields; two brothers; and one sister.

He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War, a member of Grapevine Baptist Church in Madisonville, Ky., the American Legion of Paris, Tenn., Lodge 687 Free & Accepted Masons of West Terre Haute and the United Mine Workers Association.

Cremation is scheduled, with graveside services at a later date in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Madisonville. DeBaun Funeral Homes & Crematory assisted with arrangements.
